Web Site Creation, Hosting, Optimization, Search Engine Submission and Promotion
The Internet can help build up ANY business.
There are several Search Engines and Directories that web surfers use to find sites.
The number of users of each engine varies, but it is important to be listed on as many as possible.
Generally, you only need to submit your site once to each engine.
However, some spider engines (particularly those that use Inktomi) are dropping sites from their index.
These engines need to be submitted to periodically; monthly should be sufficient.
Primary Engines
It is vital to get listed in the following list of engines and directories if you want your web site to draw traffic and drum up business.
- Altavista
Altavista offers one of the largest indexes on the internet today.
Submit to their free index and your site should be spidered within 30 days.
Altavista Submit
- Direct Hit
Direct Hit is not really a popular search engine on its own.
However, it is used by MSN and Ask Jeeves to measure link popularity and to target keywords.
Direct Hit Submit
- Excite
Excite powers several portals, such as @Home and ATT Internet Services.
Being listed here is important.
Excite Submit
- Fast Search
Fast Search has one of the largest indexes on the internet today.
Submit the main page of your site, and their robot will spider your site in about two weeks.
Fast is a partner site of Lycos, where search results from Fast are added.
Fast Search Submit
- Google
Google is one of the most widely used search engines on the internet.
It is famous for providing fast and accurate results.
You can submit directly to Google for their spider to index your site, or apply through ODP-DMOZ directory.
My advice is to submit to both.
Google Submit
- HotBot (Inktomi)
Submitting to Hotbot will place you into the Inktomi database, which is used by other search engines for backup results.
Inktomi has been dropping sites from it index though.
Resubmitting monthly is recommended.
Hotbot is currently owned by Lycos and is a partner site.
HotBot Submit
- Lycos
Lycos is one of the up and coming search engines on the internet.
It takes a littler longer to get your site listed here, but it should be useful in the long run.
Lycos Submit
- Open Directory ODP-DMOZ
Open Directory is used by AOL, Netscape Search, Google, and many smaller engines.
When submitting a site here, search for a category which would be most suitable to list your site.
If you get confused by the categories, just submit your site to the correct City you are located in.
- Zeal Directory
Zeal is a small directory which is run by volunteer editors.
However, most people do not know that Zeal is owned by LookSmart (the pay for listing directory) and search results from Zeal are used by LookSmart.
Search for a category when submitting your site here.
Secondary Engines
There are a large number of smaller search engines and directories on the Internet.
Although it is not vital to be listed on these, every little bit of traffic you bring to your site can help you make a sale.
Pay For Listing Engines
There is a growing number of search engines and directories that seek a payment to be listed.
This is a burden on Webmasters of small sites, but it has become neccessary to participate if you are serious about your online business.
Some of the pay-for-listing services have a budget or free option.
The majority of pay engines establish partnerships with other search engines, where your site can be found.
- Ah-Ha
This is a pay-per-click search engine, but it still accepts free listings last time I checked.
It is worth it to get a free listing while you can.
