Decorating Your Garden

Expert Article By: Jill Dow

Add Excitement to Your Garden - Garden Decorations!

Most every garden you wander through has it - Garden Decor! There's a garden bench at the end of a lovely meandering path, the soothing sensation of a waterfall or bubbling water garden fountain, or maybe a laughable or awe-inspiring garden statue.

It's decorations in your garden. Non plant elements - "Garden Decor".

Garden Decor is part of what makes your garden inviting, comfortable, interesting, enticing, unusual, perhaps hilarious, soothing, cherished and more!

There's no place I prefer to be than in the garden. I work and relax in it, my daughter photographs it. We wander through it, dig our hands into it and we ENJOY it's bounties while we are amazed at it's complex nature and how the garden fills our senses completely. Sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste as well as our spiritual senses are all beguiled in the garden. Linger with us a bit as we saunter through the garden.

We walk into a garden and are immediately entranced by what we see whether it be a formal garden design or a cottage garden we delight in the colors, textures and plant combinations we see. Garden decor adds additional architectural elements to the garden. I love walking through a garden gate or garden arbor filled with blooming roses or dangling grapes and then into the gardens beauty beyond. Bird baths, garden statues, seating areas and water features can all add interest and create a focal point in our gardens.

A quirky collection of containers is always intriguing garden decor. We adorn our patio every year with different plant combinations in containers that are anything from pots, or old kitchen odds and ends, to discarded tubs and old logs with rotted out gnarled holes we can fill with soil and grow in. The patio garden is one of my favorite projects because it's new and unique every year.

A scare crow, garden gnome, or a funky bird feeder can all add a sense of whimsy to the garden. I collect garden decor (ations) from garage sales and display then in the garden, moving things around as the mood strikes. It's really even more fun than rearranging the furniture!

A water garden or water feature delights the birds and other wildlife providing us with a soothing sensation of the sound of running water. A water feature doesn't need to be large. You can add a small water garden to most any garden and do it quite inexpensively. I have an old bucket that I keep unplanted in my garden. This water doesn't run, it's there for the animals. We've recently had a family of foxes move in and they enjoy a fresh drink in the mornings and evenings when the garden is cool and inviting.

Finally, as you add garden decor to your garden, think of garden furniture, maybe a patio umbrella and seating area or a pergola. Every garden needs to provide a "place to be". A relaxing shady spot or a place to plop and enjoy the beautiful view you've created.

As we've wandered gardens we've also taken pictures for you focusing on the garden decor. We hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoy sharing them. We also ask that you submit your garden decor photos to use so we can share those with our readers. We welcome your projects and project ideas.

Voting Question: Why is it that when there are Black people?

Why is it that when you live in a neighborhood where there are Black people, you cant leave your belongings outside, like for example a bike, lawn mower or a nice statute to decor your garden. But when you live in one with no Black people, who can leave whatever you want and you will find it there the next day? You can even leave your doors unlocked and nothing will happen. Rocco....Dude!!!! give some.

Voting Question: i'm looking for ideas for a mythical / fantasy 21st birthday theme....?

i've pretty much got the decor covered. lots of fairy lights and soft draped fabric. foresty green & deep purple colours with some gold. lots of candles and leafy looking stuff. and loads of fairy-type flowers. maybe even a fire somewhere. kind of enchanted woodland forest meets secret garden meets fantasy movies / novels. everyone's going to be dressing up as mythical / fantasy / enchanted forest creatures. i'm just looking for ideas for the menu, including appetisers / starters, a main meal that's easy enough to eat either standing or sitting down, dessert, and awesome drinks (both alcoholic & non). nothing too childish or kids party-like. also looking for some ideas for party favours. any ideas / recipes would be very much appreciated! thanks so much! :D

Resolved Question: What is this fruit decor thing?

I found what I think is some sort of patio/garden decor piece at Goodwill and am trying to figure out what it is. Most of it is green, it's about 2.5 feet tall. At the bottom there is a thing that comes out that looks like it's meant to hold 3 large candles. A little more than half way up there is a ceramic circle that has fruit painted on it. At the top there are 8 spirals, 4 making a sort of "platform" and 4 more above those that are hanging off the sides that look like you could maybe hang something from them. Here's a picture of it. http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs454.ash1/24983_1333765457522_1032617442_1003858_7769755_n.jpg

Resolved Question: The property appraiser is coming! What can I do?

No need to answer after 02/20/2010. I know about the neighborhood analysis and all that. I need to know which things that are WITHIN my control that I should focus on the most. If the house doesn't appraise as it did when we bought it a couple of years ago, the re-fi will fall through and that would be REALLY bad. Everything is in relatively the same shape as when we bought it (not considering decor), so I'm not severely worried (except for the market conditions), but still trying to get my house clean and up to par. So far I've deep-cleaned the carpet and floors. What else? The cobwebs that are impossibly high at the top of the stairwell? The firewood under the porch against the house? What about the basement? What REALLY matters? In your answer, please be sure to prioritize. I'm very short on time and energy, so I need to focus on the major stuff first. Also, do you know if the new "whole house" water filtration/softener system we put in will affect the value? What about the new rock garden out front? THANK YOU! It is FHA. Houses in the neighborhood aren't selling at all, so there really isn't anything to compare to. I guess I should have mentioned that I'm also short on money ... as well as energy and time.

Resolved Question: How to create a Tim Burton-style bedroom decorations?

I am trying to create a Tim Burton style bedroom. Kind of like a dark enchanted world type of feel. Like the garden in Coraline or Willy Wonka or Corpse Bride style. The room in a dark lavender. I have purchased some black vinyl to make interesting designs with. The basic inspiration for the room is something like: http://stupid-gogo.deviantart.com/art/Just-a-Moon-142516359 The room is very large so I am trying to come up with interesting furniture or decor or even floor art that could really make the room feel right. Any thoughts?
